floppy clutch pedal

hi there i have a j reg vw polo GT. today all of a sudden the clutch pedal has gone very floppy!  the car still drives and changes gear with a small amount of encouragement. it does stall when i have to stop though. has anyone got any ideas what the problem is and whether it can be fixed quickly and easily. i rely on my car to work so need it back in full form asap! many thanks

Could be the clutch (fingers have collapsed) - is it very easy to press and it won't pop back on its own

Or the cable is going - cheapest to try the cable first, and it's best to change the cable anyway when fitting a new clutch.
