Welcome to the technical section.

Please note when posting, it is helpful to others to include full details of the Polo Model you are trying to work on

E.G.  Polo GT - 1991 - 3F engine code

Also with the later cars (1991 onwards) have a diagnostic connector fitted for checking engine management faults - even newer cars have more modules that are diagnosable
This should be your first thing to try and see if any error codes have been stored.  Software to use on a laptop like VAG-COM is ideal.
1991-1994 (Mk2F Polo) - Diag port is a 2 x 2 connector on left side of dash (above bonnet release handle) - you will probably need to get / make a 2x2 to OBD adapter
1994 - 2002 Near drivers knees - pink OBDII plug (16 pins)
