I have a 2001 VW polo 1.4 SE with 86K miles on the clock. recently i had a reconditioned gearbox fitted to it. since then its revving a lot higher than it used to is this normal? at first i thought it was that bearings and the like would be new so would take a bit of time to settle in but have done nearly 2000 miles since fitted. i'm starting to think that maybe they have given me a gearbox for a 1.2 instead. any suggestions?

Sounds like the wrong final drive ratio - you need to look in your service book for the gearbox code that should be in your car, then look on the top of the bellhousing of the current box for the code you have installed.  Etka / online searches should give you the ratios
